Colterenzio is not a family-run winery, but it is one of the youngest wineries in South Tyrol and behind it there is not only a family but 300 who, all year round, work in the vineyards, delivering, autumn after autumn , precious grapes harvested strictly by hand. It should be noted that for many of these families viticulture is not the main occupation but, rather, the main passion.

The 26 winemakers of Colterenzio founded their own cooperative in 1960, near Appiano, thus becoming independent from the wine merchants who at the time defined the prices. The name of the winery derives from its own land: the small village of Schreckbichl (in Italian Colterenzio ), also playing a pioneering role in pursuing a path of quality with great constancy.
It was the Eighties and Alto Adige was mostly a land of mediocre quality reds; Raifer, the first director of the Colterenzio winery, also a winegrower, recognized the potential of this land of its excellent wines and taking advantage of the favorable terroir, the adequate extension of the vineyard area and the expertise of the local winemakers, took the step in come on. First of all, on his farm "Lafòa", a hill kissed by the sun, he replaced the Schiava vines with those of Cabernet Sauvignon and later with Sauvignon Blanc. It introduced an unprecedented quality standard, that is, a lower quantity of harvest, in the face of fine grapes, for excellent wines. Thus a new dimension of quality began to take shape, precisely from its “pilot” vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
This mentality is passed on to everyone, experimenting with the creation of quality groups with new varieties. Even today, the winery's partners and collaborators consistently pursue this model, both in the vineyard and in the production of all wines.
At the base of all this project there are now 300 winemakers: partners of the Colterenzio winery, who with their families work all year round in the vineyards to obtain fine grapes, autumn after autumn.
